I read Matt's_snarf's blog this morning with interest. I agree with her sentiments completely, beauty is indeed something from within, not superficial.
My hobby is photography and I took a day off work recently to go to a seminar on beauty and fashion photography. It was a brilliant day with a pro who has been at the top of this industry for years. And we also had a pro model to work with for the day. She was lovely, a very grounded young girl from the Welsh Valleys. A mere slip of a girl that a good gust of wind may have blown her away. Still, it did not stop her from having the biggest pile of sarnies on her plate come lunchtime. The fact that she got stuck into lunch with such gusto made me feel better somehow. She actually was this small naturally rather than because of some severely limited calorific intake. She even made the photographer promise her a McDonalds on the way home.
When we had all finished shooting the various sets that had been explained to us we were comparing shots. Mine were different. Where a few of the guys had the stereotypical male mag shots (think Nuts) I had come away with something different. I had been shooting when she was not going through the pose routine. I came away with a couple of shots that captured some vulnerability.
It may just be my taste but I'd rather have those two shots in my collection than a thousand Nuts style images.
It is one of the challenges that I am learning to like about taking peoples photos. I have always avoided it like the plague and I think that is because I really do want to capture a little bit of the the person I photograph. I don't want to just take images or I'd learn to paint. I want the real person in there. I know that makes it harder but the results are so much more worthwhile.
In other words I don't want the superficial, I want real beauty.

It's like splitting down atoms. You want the molecule. Hm. Anyway. I know what you're saying. "I play all my records backwards, sdrawkcab sdrocer ym lla yalp I." |
