Picnic At Hanging Rock (20)
x_flaire_x's profile

Many years ago, I saw Picnic at Hanging Rock. Although I was very young, I always remembered those young girls in their white dresses walking up the hillside only to vanish forever.
I think they've haunted me. Beautiful Miranda with the face of a Botticelli angel. The tiny scrap of lace clutched tightly in a man's hand. The simply mystery of it all. What did happen to those two girls and their school mistress?
I decided to buy a copy of it to see if it was how I remembered.
Goodness! Obviously as a child I was innocently unaware of the deep sexual undertones of the film. The repression symbolised by the corsets, the hats, the gloves and the stockings that the girls wildly abandon on their route up Hanging Rock - moving from civilisation to the uncontrolled natural world.
The hysteria that has such an awful mirroring with our own; the media circus, the feelings of helplessness and the terrible fear of when a child vanishes.
The undercurrents of lesbian desire.
Phew.
Picnic at Hanging Rock remains a mystery despite knowing the solution. It haunts with it's imagery and music. If anything, it was considerably better than I remembered as I now understand more of the subtext, the symbolism of the film.

I have that dvd and a sudden urge to chase you up a rock and show you the undercrackers of lesbian desire. " I'm a lady and I like to do ladies things like press flowers, stroke kittens and swim in the river wearing dresses and hats" Lady Emily

Gosh, that's an offer I've never had before. I'm terribly flattered.

Have you ever seen a film called The Beguiled? It had me completely riveted and always seemed to be on at similar times to Picnic. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
apparently "I hate you, you sasanach bastards" is not a safeword...

First time I've flirted with a panda so it's a new one for me too.

Can't say I've ever seen it, it sounds like an interesting flick though. I can bend space and time.

A few years after the author died, her publisher released 'The Secret of Hanging Rock' written by her. Here is a summary of the book. *BE WARNED - DO NOT CLICK IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE SOLUTION* Trust me, it's a lot more fun not knowing! Elsewhere on that site are other solutions put forward by people who aren't the author.

I'm afraid I haven't. I'll keep a look out for it. I've just read the blurb on wikipedia. There certainly seem some similarities.

I remember thinking it was sad, beautiful and very haunting... and i was old enough then to recognise some of the sexual undercurrent, but not experienced enough to make any sense of it.
I'd love to watch it again. However, for whoever asked how it ended, i'm afraid you shouldn't expect any kind of satisfactory answer, but it's definitely very worth seeing. "It's alright to let yourself go as long as you can let yourself back" Mick Jagger
