I've been looking round for a cheap source of square section tube and couplers; possibly fruit cage materials or for shelving, to make a frame with various tie up/down points but giving good access all round; or maybe i need to learn to weld.. any thoughts?

Predrill the holes for the eyes (use heavy duty vine eyes, Eliza Tinsley do good ones) to minimise splitting of the dowel. Also, instead of broom handly, buy 30mm dowelling, it's thicker and has more give in the wood so it grips the screw thread better.

Google your local steel stockholder. Most of them have a minimum order around £40 or so. You'll need some pretty heavy duty tools for a bolted together frame though, if all you've got is DIY gear then you're better off building your frame out of timber. Don't use stuff for shelving unless you get the warehouse grade stuff and add some bracing to keep it rigid, most shelving rigs are designed for static loads and a struggling sub can easily generate a point load beyond what the shelving design can handle at a single joint (they're usually designed to take the load spread over the whole structure because stuff on shelves doesn't shift about and concentrate its load.) Really, really don't use fruit cage material. It's designed to hold netting in a summer breeze. An accident waiting to happen if you tie 60 kilos of play partner to it. Another possibility is to try an engineering supplier for screw fit iron pipework. Again, you'll need some tools out of the ordinary if you're using lengths other than the standard, but the materials are quite cheap.

Whilst you're at B&Q, grab some 13 mil copper pipe. Once you get home, beat it flat and it's ideal for making cuffs and collars (and lots of other exciting things) with a bit of cutting, bending and hole drilling. As it naturally has rounded edges, it's reasonably comfortable, and completely inescapable. Being copper, they can be polished up nicely, if someone needs a task to keep them occupied.

I can weld and have done many years of fabrication but no longer have a welding set or a place to work. Copper Lighting type of even aluminum is a good thin shapable material and can be done with very basic tools ie saw and a file.
