I am setting up a small massage business from home - have a domain name/web address etc, just need to build (get built...) the website and find a decent (but reasonable) host service.
Can you clever peeps who build websites give me any helpful info - quick tips if i try and build my own website (it is only an info/advertising one, no selling etc) or offer your (again reasonable) services if it might be more fruitful (and less fraught).
Also any advice on good host companies please.
Thanks

For hosting I use www.krystalhosting.co.uk. I have been with them for some time, and have had no problems whatever. They are reasonably cheap, they seem fast, and their customer service is more than good - they tend to respond to queries within hours. Really, they have been everything I could want in a hosting company. I have had a web site since 1997, and have had experience of a few hosting companies - Krystal Hosting are by far the best I have used.

I do very basic CSS and HTML if you want some help, and for hosting, this one's pretty good as well as cheap. Take a look at my home page (using a free css template for the basics) - can help you with that if that's the sort of thing you want.

You look have to look at your design from the point of view of a user. They don't give a shit about your design. They just want to buy something, find out something or be entertained by something. Everything else gets in the way. The sites below should be compulsory reading for all website designers, unfortunately there are still people who aspire to get their site listed here Free designs at OSWD. Jakob Neilsen's site about useability. Read through the Alertbox section. Vincent Flander's site telling you about shit design. Go through Checklist 1 and Checklist 2. You can get away with a couple of minor infringments, but do not break any of the big ones. The wonderful Joe Gillespie's site that shows you how to make you design look really simple, yet work. A site which tells you using what browser, what screen size and what options people are using. Lastly, do not use javascript. There are a lot of people who have it turned off, to increase security and cut down on annoyances. If your site relies on it expect a significant percentage of your audience to go elsewhere because your site doesn't work. Science, the only religion that works even if you don't believe in it. | |
