It's not possible to be a cynic without first being a romantic. Cynicism surely results from having your dreams shattered.

Actually, I'm not at all pessimistic. I find facing the facts of our existence rather comforting and the adventures we can have with our minds endlessly interesting.

The bad temper rise, I grant you, but the increased appreciation of every spring more than compensates.

I discovered Whitman's poems through Delius who set a couple to music. In spite of their allure, I'm not ready to settle for those golden halcyon days just yet. I've got a bit more hot, dirty living to do. But the attraction grows in me.

More than a decade ago, I was accused of being a cynic. I disputed this outrageous accusation. Of course. And described myself instead, as a realist. The immediate rejoinder was, 'That's what all cynics say!'

Those least able to formulate decent ideas push themselves forwards to be 'politicians' and once in their chosen 'calling' work 9 to 5 formulating more and more non-sensible ideas to put-upon us 'the people'.

Do people realise the rate at which new laws regulating every aspect of our lives are being created ? Hardly any of this stuff gets debated at election time and given the chance to vote on most of this idiocy 'the people' would reject it. This is how a creeeping dictatorship/authoritarian society is being created here in Britain.
