OK a blog of two parts really as I am addressing two separate points linked by the common theme in the title there.
The first was something I was going to address a short time ago, but the fact was it would have only degenerated into yet another bloody BM thread had I done so at that time.
Freedom of speech. During that whole BM hysteria one Gentleman on here took part of the discussion to His blog and thereby was able to confine the contributions to those HE considered 'on topic' for the discussion parameters He had outlined. Some IC members rather took exception to this claiming He was breaching their freedom of speech.
Utter bollox! What was being complained about was that they wanted to stop others having the kind of discussion they chose to have, wanted to impose their agenda on that discussion that some wished to have without that agenda being forced down their throat.
Freedom of speech means those people wanting to have that kind of discussion should have the ability to do so... and in this case, they did.
The freedom of speech of those complaining was not effected, they had the freedom to express their point of view in their OWN blogs did they not? If they wanted a free-for-all they had the ability to set up and have the kind of discussion they wanted.... but didn't choose to do so because they where too busy complaining, erroneously, that the Gentleman had impinged their freedom of speech.
The Second issue was raised by events late last night. One young gent expressed in interest in organizing an under35's munch up in Scotland and another member seemed to take great exception to this and hounded him over about three different threads.
If you want to look at any event targeted at a specific group which attempts to exclude those not of the target group, then sure you can build a case for 'discrimination', in doing so you are attacking peoples freedom to choose, but sure you can build one.
In the case of U35 munches, certainly there are 'some' who feel more comfortable attending an even where there are only likely to be people of roughly their own age. When I was under 35 Myself I'd have been unlikely to attend such as I never had any problem mingling with all age groups. But I had the freedom to do so and so should those who feel more comfortable in the restricted age environment.
Same with the ladys munch. Some feel more comfortable and they should have that freedom to choose. There where arguments about certain groups being excluded from that too at one point.
But really, why complain? What is the point? If someone wants a particular kind of event and they get off their arse and put the work in to organize it then great, they are giving more choice to their target group.... If you are not in that target group, how are you effected? If they hadn't got of their arse then no-one would have that choice anyhow so your own situation isn't changed and if you feel strongly enough about it you too have the freedom to get off your own arse and set up something you and those in your situation ARE included in.... thereby creating MORE choices, more ways to express peoples freedom to choose.
Freedom is about having choices, sorry folks but that includes the choice to NOT have certain things or people involved just as much as it means being able to choose what things and people are included.
If someone else's choices happen to exclude you, you have other options including setting something up yourself!
Less of the childish negative trying to berate, browbeat and bully to tear them down for DARING to exclude you.... be a bit more positive, support or build something you DO want and that you ARE included in. And let the others get on with what they choose to do!
That goes for both issues, whether for discussions or events.

I actually haven't seen the BM Weblog and I didn't contribute much to the threads. I dont think I have to either as I agree with you 100% in Principle. This I think part of the problem, people lacking a coherant and consistant set of principles.

People work on feelings, these may change and flow, nothing wrong with that. ............. I contributed to the first few public threads about 'you know who' but not to any weblog. As far as I am concerned, you state your case, you can reply to any questions/comments about your case but people on both sides of the fence kept generating more and more bloody threads and posts all claiming they were supporting freedom of speech.... I only complain about things I feel passionate about (not all that much really) but I do think there is a culture of whinging in this country. It is almost like people do not have any real problems so they want to create them. Let's face it, no one on this site is starving, they have net access so presumably a roof over their heads. Most of us have the kind of freedom and privileges people in other countries can only dream about, so what do we do? Whinge about: speed cameras; political correctness; internet trolls etc etc etc. Really, will any of it kill you? I wish some people would gain a perspective. Original Alice

Nothing to disagree with here. The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs, haven't we learned our lesson? The corner store sells finest scotch, but who's got uncut powder?
