Last year was the best birthday of my life. I was in Toronto at a birthday party held by my friends both vanilla and BDSM and my family. It was during Passover, which is a Jewish holiday where you cannot eat bread, and the organizers had gone to the trouble of finding a Kosher for Passover birthday cake. I was stunned. We spent the time chatting, cuddling and giving the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 treatment to Debbie Does Dallas. It was awesome

I think the party marked a turning point in my life. It was the first time I had most of the people I cared about in one place without any lies or subterfuge. My sisters didn't even bat an eye when I gave my girlfriend a not-even-close-to-platonic birthday smooch. Despite the variety of conversations, no one felt left out though a few of my friends were a bit freaked out by some of the BDSM topics.

Before last year, I dreaded birthdays. I've had a series of horrible things happen to me in the March- April time period from as far back as I can remember. On most of my previous birthdays, I can remember heart rendering family arguments. This year, for the first time, I'm looking forward to my birthday.

This year I'm going out for lunch with my colleagues at work. My boyfriend and I both took Friday off work to recover from the very expensive (hehehehe … you did say I get to pick the place dear) restaurant he's taking me to on Thursday night. And, I get to start my birthday celebrations a day early because tonight I get to see my fabulous blue best friend. I feel quite lucky.
