Last November a friend was in trouble financially and I
leant her a hundred pounds. At the time, the money was
to be returned for Christmas. Christmas came and she
didn't have the money, which was understandable. I
relied on my credit cards to make it through
Christmas. I was able to pay off the credit cards with
my tax refund. Who knew the government ever gave back
money, eh? LOL!
January came and I texted and e-mailed her a couple
times. At one point she said she was on the way to the
bank to transfer the money. Two weeks later I e-mailed
my bank and received confirmation that no money
transfer was ever put through to my bank account. Last
night we spoke for the first time in ages and as soon
as I mentioned the money the conversation abruptly
ended. I believe she has now blocked me from her IRC
and MSN list.
Today I received confirmation that my company is doing
layoffs. I'm looking at my budget and trying to figure
out how long I can stay in this country should I need
to wait for a new work permit to be issued. I
understand a hundred pounds is a lot of money, but it
could be paid back in smaller sums. For example,
twenty pounds a month until the debt was paid. If I
knew the money was coming, I could include it in my
plan.
What hurts most is that I trusted this person. I was
there for her when she had relationship difficulties
and I was there for her when she couldn't pay her rent
and now she's not there for me when I need someone to
listen to my fears and to help me with my rent.
I now understand the British term “Mug” because that's
what she took me for. Edited Tue 3 Feb 04, 11:05 AM by bunnyRys
