Why do you call someone 'Master' or 'Mistress'?

All right, I've wanted to write this weblog for a long time but have been holding off as I didn't want to deal with the backlash but curiosity has won so here goes!

I'm totally repulsed by the use of the word 'Master' in BDSM. In fact, when I hear or read about someone called 'Master' I either get very angry or feel a need to laugh aloud. These feelings are based on the fact that the word 'Master' denotes a certain level of knowledge and experience, something sadly lacking in most Doms who use this title. Furthermore, the act of controlling someone to the extent that you are their Master seems anathematic to daily life.

I have similar but less vehement issues with the word 'Mistress' The word 'Mistress' was originally used for a woman in a relationship or kept by a married man. Consequently, I don't believe the term 'Mistress' makes as powerful a BDSM statement as 'Master'. In fact, in this view it's almost insulting to call someone you love 'Mistress'

I prefer the terms Dom or Domme as they indicate the closeness of a relationship without prejudice. But why on earth do so many people choose to call or call themselves 'Mistress' or 'Master'?
