Endorphins

A sub can become used to beatings and physically need the endorphins they produce to feel right. It's easy to become addicted to the raised levels of adrenaline. When these disappear, the body goes through withdrawal. Some of these symptoms can be partially assuaged by the high experienced from sex or chocolate, but neither option offers the equivalent emotional release.

The psychological play in a beating be it Top/bottom or Dom/sub can effect the submissive's overall psyche as much as the physical aspects. Without that mental give and take of control, it's easy for a sub to become lost and confused over his/her place in the “scene” or worse, question their sanity for needing something that's contrary to societal beliefs.

Therefore, BDSM withdrawal can lead to a depression. When this is combined with dietary and/or sexual restrictions, the result can be deadly. Please keep in mind the affects of endorphins on your body before re- assessing other aspects of your personality and life.
