an ankle bracelet is just a sexy piece of jewellery if you ask me. I do remember from when I was at school that there's a right side to wear one, and a wrong one, but I don't remember now.

My mum almost had a fit when I got one tattooed round my ankle. Her dad would never let her wear an anklet because it meant you were a prostitute (either then or when he was younger) so she was a bit upset. Im not sure it made a difference what ankle it was on, she was never allowed one at all. I always used to wear an anklet round my right ankle, just because thats the one it felt right on, but now I have to wear it on the left cos I got the tattoo on the right. I don't believe it's a tradition that holds true anymore, but I dont think it's really "empty stereotype" either. People of a certain age (or above a certain age) and possibly from particular places or particular careers (my grandad was a policeman) will possibly make assumptions, but then some people will do that based on what you wear no matter what it is! In Biblical times it drew attention to the fact you were a prostitute. The Geek shall inherit the Earth.

My mum always told me that only hookers wore ankle chains. It's always stuck with me. I don't think *oh they're a hoochie* but I think about my mum telling me that. I don't like them anyways. Anklets that is, not whores. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

I have come across one american site in the past that refers to anklets.. but I cant find any other recent references...... I tend to think that anklets are just pretty jewelry....
lol, but then I never got my ears pierced as I could never find out which one is the correct one for a man to have pierced so who am I to judge Let tears flow of their own accord: their flowing is not inconsistent with inward peace and harmony. Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)

That's probably a sound economic decision.

When i was a kid my mum and sisters used to say an ankle bracelet was the sign of a prostitute (sorry, not making any judgements here on anyone who wears one, just an old wives tale) They also used to say women who wore a red hat didn't wear any knickers. If we were out and we saw a woman wearing a red hat, they used to give me thrupence to shout "red hat, no drawers!" at the top of my voice. I never quite knew what it meant, but they found it hilarious.

In the 70s i worked on the cross channel ferries at Dover. Many of the deck crew were old sea dogs from the merchant navy, and many of the catering staff were gay. It was a fashion for seamen to have your ear pierced, (this was 1974 remember and ear piercing for men was not yet mainstream) this was seen as rather cool and risque at that time, kinda like being a pirate! Anyway i had my left ear pierced as the strict code was "left ear for straight and right ear for gay". In the 80s George Michael started wearing earrings in both ears so the "rule" went out the window and people started having either or both done. Turns out he was gay anyway. lol
