Have you ever experienced a media frenzy like it ?

In my life time i've heard of many poor little innocent children being abducted and never head of again. Their fate haunts us and tears at our souls. Not knowing what happenened to them is the worst thing. God alone knows what pain their parents have to endure.

In the case of little Madeleine, her parents decided that their evening meal was more important than ensuring that their children were left in safe hands.

When my wife and i were younger and had children of a similar age, we allowed ourselves a "drink out" at the local pub when either Nannan or my wife's Sister was baby sitting. Even then, my wife rang home every 20 minutes or so to check on them.

That's how it should be.

Here, we have parents who deserted their children for a chocolate gateau and manage to get an audience with the media-seeking Catholic church in an attempt to ease their rightly founded guilty conscience when things turned sour.

This is the latest media frenzy.

The previous media frenzy involved a silly woman in the Royal Navy who couldn't stop blabbing her big mouth to her Irananian captors and the world's television.

I can draw a parallel between the woman who blabbed and was the first to cash in on her "story" to the Sunday papers....... and the parents of little Madeleine.

The former wasn't fit to serve in our armed forces and the latter weren't fit to be parents and yet BOTH have grabbed the world's attention in a media frenzy that i hope will keep our hearts with the victims rather than than those who carry the blame.

Then there's the vultures who get off on this misery 24/7. On TV, in the papers and discussing endlessly at work, socialising or in chatrooms? Aren't we all encouraging this emotional hysteria society seems to thrive on now?

I must say I think it was irresponsible of Madeleine's parents to go out leaving the children unsupervised, but they can hardly have imagined what would happen - how likely is it, after all? Still, there should have been someone with them.

It's been said that the parents are deliberate in their decision to encourage media coverage (not that I imagine they have much choice)in the hope that such coverage will help her to be found. Whilst the Portugese police might not have been very effective, I do find the "bungling Johnny foreigner" approach from the meedja rather unnecessary. Naturally it is not entirely inconvenient to the media that Madeleine is/was an attractive (female) child. Had the child been a male of 9 with big ears, say, I think the media would have reacted rather differently. Cynique, moi?

On the other hand, some people (not I) think that showing pictures of the child will only encourage paedophiles and weirdos generally.

It is a sad fact that children are disappeared - think of Ben Needham. They always have been, and always will be. I think the agony in this must be the not knowing, the hoping.

I think the Iranian hostage coverage is a different matter entirely, apart from the mad media. Unpleasant though it is, it's just what the media do. All the time.

At least soon "silly season" will be upon us, and we will need to fear nothing worse than last night's exploits in the Big Brother House for weeks to come. Oh fabjuous day, tralee tralaa

i bloody hate the way media makes some of those people look, really does make me angry. It's okay if somebody wants to be in that limelight but I don't think it should take the place of more important news at all. Totally empathise with you.

Media seeking catholic church? It couldn't possibly be that the Pope felt so bad for the parents could it?

I'm not sure what you are saying here.

More important news?

Are you saying a missing child is not important?
