I thought i'd write a blog hilighting a point made in Iona's blog earlier today as it affects people other than just us Veggies.
Mars have decided (yesterdays Daily Mail) that a lot of their choclate bars (at present incl Snickers, Galaxy, Twix, Bounty, Miky Way, Maltesers & Minstrels) will now be made using animal rennet as a cost cutting exercise instead of the readily available but slightly more expensive vegetarian rennet they have been using up till now.
Apart from the vegetarian protest, a lot of other people who are animal lovers are also complaining to them as animal rennet is an enzyme taken from the stomachs of newborn calves.
Surely slightly reducing the size of the bars, or charging a penny more, would be more preferable than this distasteful process.
Walkers also changed from vegetarian rennet to animal rennet for their Cheese and Onion crisps, but were soon 'persuaded' back to the vegetarian version by public protest. Tamara x

It struck me as ironic that Smoky Bacon and Chicken were suitable for vegetarians and Cheese and Onion wasn't. I adore Galaxy and now they've mucked that up! (Sighs) What is the world coming to? I aim to please - and I'm pleased with my aim Edited 18 May 07, 6:35 PM by Iona_O |

This seems to be a ridiculous move to me. I am not a vegetarian and not particularly sentimental about animals, but, it does not even make business sense. They are alienating a huge part of their customer base for the sake of a tiny bit of penny pinching. Surely the economic equivalent of shooting themselves in the foot! Gary x. Everyone who lives dies, but not everyone who dies has truly lived. |

dont forget most of the renet comes from male calves stomachs which are killed at birth anyway.so realy the only way to stop it is to get rid of cows. and chocolate. |

Issue over as they have relented (according to the BBC news today) after apparently 6000 protests to their website. Good thing too, cos I like my Mars bar and I wouldn't have eaten them knowing they are not veggie! |
