FYI Edinburgh is a lot older than the likes of Manchester. the old town has extremely narrow and cobbled streets. It's a nightmare to get down them normally never mind with some godforsaken heap of slow moving metal in the way. As a point of interest Edinburgh had trams decades ago and hey guess what? They got rid............so one wonders why bring them back.

Don't you believe it. Here in London it costs us £100+ pa for a permit to park in our street, and if you want to drive into Central London during the day it will cost £8 per day. Just another case of councils taking the opportunity to fleece and regulate us rather than being there to provide essential services for us, which I believe their purpose should be. Unless your own council's different from ours, but I'm sceptical? | ||

I am not convinced that congestion charging et al is all about congestion. Once you have a chip in your car for the purpose of tracking you for 'congestion charging' the police, security services and even your local council will have the ability to know where you are every minute of the day. In London Oyster cards are being used to track people and these records used in court. I would not be surprise that supermarket 'loyality cards' can be used for the same purpose. (I only use mine in my local store). Big Brother (Orwell not Ant & Dec) is alive and well.

Actually they are talking about tracking cars, not for congenstion charge, but for road tax, your tax, they are claiming, will be based on the amount of distance you travel... As for the oyster card, you can buy a pay as you go one, for £3 from an annonymous machine, top it up by cash and they never know who you are... As for the congenstion charge in Manchester, well, the amount of traffic in manchester city centre is stupid, it can take me upwards of 45mins to get from my house (on the edge of the centre) to picadilly station when someone is kind enough to give me a lift, the problems is... it's less then 1.5 miles... I can in some respects understand peoples complaints of public transport, but I've never been able to drive and have had to spend my entire life using public transport, I really don't get what the big deal is, yep it takes longer then driving, but thats just something you have to deal with. There is a combined bus/tram ticket... being currently sat on a train I can't check what it is, but I'll have a look when I get back to Picadilly this evening. maybe it's just me with a dirty mind then....
