Ah right; I was going to ask what money was on offer.

This sounds like an interesting project to get involved with. Yet I know my 'masochism' isn't disembodied; it's dependant on connecting with a Domme. I'm sure others are in a similar position: we bottom to individuals rather than to a vague instinct. By the same token, I'm sure there are bottoms who will bottom just to get the pain kick. I'm not sure what the project is seeking to prove, therefore: my - though not necessarily others' - masochism is tied to a particular individual, not to a random, psychology lab-inspired stimulus. The sample will therefore be self-selecting in many ways, and will only demonstrate what is true of that particular sample.

One hopes that their questionnaire is going to include what types of pain and what situations their subjects find pleasurable. And also that they will ask afterwards whether said subjects *did* find the pain pleasurable. After all, if lying in a CAT scanner being subjected to pain is a new experience for you, it might not be as much fun as you think and that would skew the results. Ten subjects will not give them much statistical power unless they spot some pretty spectacular changes, although it will certainly be interesting to read the final paper if they manage to publish.

In answer to several here : Yes ideally they want at least 20 to guarantee the project is funded. 10 at least by April. It is possible they are also approaching other groups ( I suggested to them they should invite applicants from the tattoo and piercing fraternity for example) Yes it will be self-selecting, but then it takes a certain sort of person to know they like pain and find it pleasurable. The aim of the project, is to identify the pain/pleasure switch in some more definite way so that with some future medicinal input those who suffer chronic pain may find a different or better way to manage their suffering. Heck I am no scientist but it made sense to me when I spoke to the team leaders for a couple of hours. I agree it is a very clinical and abnormal test, but they do have reliable and tested response methods which they are only using in a different case : on those who know themselves in a certain way. I will ask for further details about the background questionnaire but at this stage : if we do not get the numbers it will not be produced !! Thanks to all those expressing interest. If those are converted into firm committments, that will be marvellous. Cheers T. "The sunshine in your heart: more important than the sunshine on your skin."

endorphin : suggest you research the travel options with costs and get back to me please? Coach trip day return Victoria/Oxford is 12 quid, and takes just a couple of hours. The day trip ticket is valid for a full 24 hours, so you can actually return the next morning to London if timed carefully. ( train is about twice the price) For those coming a distance, or on low wage, it might be possible to have an overnight stay with one of the members of my Oxford Munch, especially if a time slot is available close to a Munch weekend. Add in the London to your side, and let me know your estimate for the journey. T. "The sunshine in your heart: more important than the sunshine on your skin."

Exactly, and I cannot see how they will factor in the usual influences... of trust/confidence in the Dom/me, the sexual arousal in some and the undoubted effect of the endorphin rush that needs encouraging by warm ups quite often. It may tell something about a random sample of people who volunteer and how they respond to pain, but has little to do with masochism I feel.

I would be happy to participate. Sounds interesting. And i can get to Oxford easily. Do they realise that replicating pain within a laboratory setting might not get quite the same results as if it was with regular play partners and in a club or home environment? But, yes, I'm happy to take part if eligable. (Male, 44). Saint severin of Harrow, the benchmark by which purity & normality are measured. |
