Nothing quite like it………. Those of you who know this perverted pair from “op norf” will be aware of some of the crap passing our way. For me getting up in to the hills and letting the wind blow the accumulated crappy thoughts and emotions away was well overdue.

The hills around Rothbury were the setting for today's stomp, just what was needed, a five mile loop. I realised this would be time well spent when I opened the boot to find ……NO BOOTS! This particular walk is getting a bit of a reputation!

So, unperturbed off I bimbled. One man (in deck shoes) and his dog. Well this dog has a thing for sticks (not an un-dog like fetish). OK this dog has a thing for branches, as long as she can lift it, she will carry it. This particular piece was as thick as my arm and 7 foot long. No problem I thought as she pranced up the track, inseparable from todays must have doggy accessory.

Then hemmed in by a drystone wall and gorse I caught glimpse of them. Thirty or so aged ramblers, all goretex, gaters and walking sticks. And one dog barrelling towards them at top speed with her branch carried at knee height! Septuagenarian skittles and that thought almost had them all felled as I stumble to get the command “stop” past my laughter. As the stragglers past by with “hullo's” and comments on how well behaved the dog was. She was now sat at heel (still with stick) and looking angelic. I had to swallow back more laughter.

So, one dog, a piece of lumber, an ageing set of ramblers, some very beautiful windy scenery and all is well with the world again.

PS. If you see a black dog carrying a big stick running towards you “JUMP” because one day I will not be able to get the words out!
