I'm toying with the idea of setting up to shoot some BDSM related videos for the web. I have some nice home videos but obviously the quality isnt fantastic, particularly in the sound department.

I don't know much about desktop video production at all. Thinking of something like a Canon XH A1, recording to a Firestore or similar and then into editing in Premiere. Certainly dont want to bugger about capturing from tape.

Of course videos are heavily compressed for the web so I wonder if its worth trying to get too high quality. Maybe a cheaper camera would be fine.

Interested in any comments on this, any experiences people are willing to share, whether there is perhaps a sort of "industry standard" setup that people use?

The higher the quality of your original, the less you lose in compression.

I edit on FCP, so can't comment on Premiere.

As far as I'm aware, there ain't no industry standard

Thanks. FCP I know is thought to be the best but I'm in a Wintel world unfortunately and I think its Apple only?

Am tonking about with the Premiere trial at the moment lol.

We edit on Premier Pro - bit of a bugger to get your head around at first as personally I don't find any of the Adobe suite all that intuative - but if you can stick with it then it can produce good results.

And I'm with Keith - there's no industry standard.

Canon XM-1 and Premier Pro (you do need a good beefy PC and tons of disk space) work for me but I'm still learning. Make sure you don't buy anything that records to disc as it can be a sod getting it into Premier and I lost loads of quality but maybe I did it the hard way.

I have used various versions of premier for the last six years, if you use a firewire cable you shouldn't have any trouble importing direct from your dv tape into premiere. Yeah pro is the best to date, due to a lot of reasons, buy a decent camera and install it on a fast computer and your laughing.if anyone needs to chat about premiere drop me a line, though there are tonnes of sites that'll help you with tutorials etc

Just spotted my name in print LOL.

I use a Canon XL1 mini DV camera for my spanking website (http://www.soundpunishment.com) filming. The picture quality is superb and more than good enough for the web. The BBC and many nature filmakers use this camera for braodcast and news gathering. I take the films into Adobe Premiere 2 via a cheap (well they are now ... it cost me £900 when I bought it 6 yeras ago!) domestic mini DV camera with IEEE1294 (firewire) in/out capbility.

I don't think the cost of a Firestore (£600+) is justified unless you are taking lots of material daily. The extra weight added to the camera will spoil its maneuverability when hand held, make it more tiring to film with, and really it is no trouble to take the digital DV tape into Premiere ... I just set it up and go make coffee or have dinner etc. I copy all raw footage to hardisk, edit it and then keep the edited AVI copy on a 1TB network addressable store (NAS) unit.
