For the first time, Manchester will hold its own Transgender Day of Remembrance event.
We will meet at Sackville Park in the Gay Village on Sunday November 19th from 3pm. Please wear black or regular clothes with a black armband or the appropriate colour of mourning for your culture. Please also bring a candle (spares will be available) for the one minute's silent vigil (actual time TBA on the day). A simple holder may be made by using a small square of card with a cross cut in the centre to hold the candle and catch drips. Leaflets will be ready on the day outlining the facts about TG people's vulnerability to violence. Please feel free to bring memorabilia of loved ones, additional readings, flowers and so on.
We will be reading the list of TG people murdered from the resource www.rememberingourdead.org - if you would like to be involved in reading or leaflet distribution, or for more information, please contact me by memo.
Please note the media will be told so it is likely that photographs will be taken.

I never knew of such a day, but it has my full support. Unfortunately, I wont be able to attend due attendinding my best friends funeral.
I hope the rememberance day goes well and that there will be a yearly event with a bit more notice.

Yes, hopefully it will be. Sorry about the lack of notice, but a friend and I realised nothing was being done in Manchester so decided to do something, and that was only a week or so ago. SM Dykes Manchester

Last night Channel 5 showed and episode of Law and Order Special Victims Unit that centered around a pre-op transexual woman. A timely reminder maybe but there was no mention before during or after the show of Transgender Day of Remberance. It is a shame. The program highlighted many of the attitudes and issues our transgender folk have to face every day.
Hopefully maybe we will see a few of you in the park today.
