Blogging for Backlash (3)

Who has the right to decide what happens in my own home behind closed doors? Do you *really* want to know what goes on there?

Because I think the correct answers from any right-minded individual to those questions are "I do" and "Certainly not!"

I'm a single professional woman in my 30's with a responsible job and a wide range of hobbies and interests. I live alone, but I have a partner and we're in an extremely loving relationship.

I cannot get excited about the proposed legislation to ban pornographic violent images because, quite frankly, I don't get excited by pornographic violent images.

But then, you don't get excited by a great piece of choral music like I do. Or by my cooking. Or by my partner's Transformers collection. Or by my friend's board games collection.

But you wouldn't tell *them* they couldn't keep photos of the things that excite them, would you?

You wouldn't say that my friends who are into live fantasy roleplay can't take pictures of their costumes and activities, would you? Have you *seen* how violent some of those activities can be?

Of course, they're not really violent. Nobody really comes to any harm. Just like the photos that some of my friends might be interested in taking and keeping don't show anyone coming to any real harm. They don't show scenes of 'real peril'. Because BDSM isn't about causing harm.

I used to do a lot of makeup for amateur dramatic productions, including some real Hammer Horror stuff. Why should it be permissible for me to take photos of some of my more gruesome creations, while my friends cannot take photos of their partners in consensual activities?

Have you considered how ridiculous it would be to try and police this law if it was enacted? We should be fighting crime, and genuine violence that pervades our society. We should be fighting terrorism and seeking to integrate communities, not put up barriers between them. We should be trying to find ways to accommodate genuine prisoners without putting them up in police cells, not finding more work for our overworked police service to do and potentially creating a new load of criminals.
