Like many others here and elsewhere, I have an awful lot going on in my life. Stresses and strains of daily living, job/kids/house etc... but I finally found a little bit of time to put down in words how I feel about the Government's proposed legislation and how it would affect me.
I'm a mum, a normal 39 year old woman with a job/mortgage/family, who happens to have what appears to be a widely held opinion amongst other consenting kinky adults.. but ostensibly an attitude which appears somewhat different to the masses, regarding what goes on in my bedroom, or in private clubs I pay to attend and utilise the facilities of, or in the privacy of my own home when there are no kids home.
It's my own damn business!
This new Government law would impose limitations on me as follows. No more saving beautiful memories of my own sex life, or those of good friends and fellow 'alternative lifestyle' folk. No more taking pictures to treasure of fantastic experiences I've shared with others. No more keeping video clips for teaching some of the kinkier things we enjoy, that others wish to learn safely. No more website even perhaps?
As far as the new laws go, I'm the first to advocate and defend new laws prohibiting paedophila or necrophilia, and concur wholeheartedly with laws attempting to banish or make illegal those things which do NOT have anything to do with consent. Children and animals cannot consent, by virtue of not having the wisdom, experience or knowledge to know what they appear to be consenting to. I've had that argument with more than a few over the years. Desecrating dead bodies? Just profoundly wrong on so many levels.
Also, on the basis of abuse and NON consent, fine, feel free to legislate against abuse, rape, kidnap, violence - note - in NON consensual circumstances. We all want those kinds of people behind bars and 'educated' differently. Nobody, to my knowledge, is disputing the laws against these other things... but associating 'consensual bdsm' with violence and abuse, paedophila and necrophilia, personally I find abhorrent, damning and offensive.
When it comes to my own sex life, the 'games' we play with each other physically, however apparently perverse or disgusting to 'some'... is MY OWN BUSINESS, so long as the person/people I am playing with has/have consented, in full and accepting knowledge, completely.
So yes, I fully oppose this legislation as it stands currently. It needs to be reviewed once again. Some of that which it contained originally has been reviewed/revised already... but it could still land me, an honest, respectable and respected community member (and not just the bdsm community either), behind bars, simply because I have a particularly kinky sex life. We enjoy many things that those here consider 'edge play', most images therefore of what 'we' do would be outlawed by the currently proposed laws as they stand, so I daren't keep them any more, at least for now.
I spent last night deleting and erasing files, just to be safe. To keep my children (and my reputation) safe, they will always be my priority. But I was incredibly sad to do so. I hope in the future I can feel safe once again keeping beautiful memories for me to enjoy at later dates.
It reminds me of having to hide any evidence that I'm bisexual, or a dyke, or polyamorous or even pagan, 'just in case' it gets into the wrong hands and unintentionally hurts someone I care about.. because people with no knowledge or understanding can presume that any one of those things could make me an unfit mother, and use it against me.
I'm disgusted that I still have to hide so much of who I am, except to those who know and love me.
Perhaps one day, if I stand up now to be counted against having to hide my bdsm love... then others will stand up and be counted for me, when it comes to the same battles being fought again, against these other aspects of who I am.. the same as they did and do regarding 'gay'.
Stand up and speak, tell them why YOU vote against the new laws.. and hope that they too will stand up and speak against those who would oppress YOU, when your turn comes, if it is not here and now.
