Knee jerk law is always a mistake. Take the changes in the firearm laws after the massacres at Hungerford and Dunblane, has it affected the levels of gun crime in the UK? No it hasn't, because it was a knee jerk reaction to a terrible tragedy and not properly thought through….something to appease the masses.
The proposed law on violent pornography is just the same. Will it affect the levels of violent crime in the UK…no it wont. Why? Because the vast majority of the perpetrators of violent crime wont be affected. They don't look at images of violent pornography, most wouldn't even know how to find them.
As taxpayers we have a right to demand that our government make good laws that WORK. If, as we are led to believe, this law is a direct result of one murder (as tragic as that is) what about the thousands of people killed every year by drunken drivers?
My point is that, although Liz Longhurst's loss is huge and unbearable for her, there are many people who share a similar loss who saw their loved ones off to work or school in the morning not knowing they wouldn't come back that night, killed by some drunken idiot at the wheel of their car.
Never mind that this proposed law might infringe on my personal life, never mind that it might infringe on the lives of my friends, never mind that there is no evidence to support it, never mind that the majority of offenders will never be affected by it, never mind that in all likelihood not one life will be saved by it…….How can it be justified?
