For the first time since Christmas I was back in church today. I consider myself to be a Christian but when it comes to collective worship, I'm certainly lapsed (and some aspects of my theology are definitely outside the orthodox teachings of the major denominations!)
Anyway, I was there because I needed God's help and support, and as always, He (She/It/They) gave it, though not in the manner expected.
I was there also because my ex-slave (asseta), about whom I still care very deeply, is in need of His help. So my main reason for going was to pray on her behalf, and to ask the church to pray for her in the intercessionary prayers (which they did). Whether God answers these prayers, and in what manner, I shall have to wait and see.
I was reminded again (very forcefully) of how valuable the Church can be - to my great surprise, many people in the congregation remembered me and asked after my family after the service, and some agreed to remember asseta in their weekly prayer meeting as well. In this way, my own need for support and strength from the Lord was granted, without my even realising I had asked for it.
It goes against every rational impulse in me, but I have found that God does answer sincere prayers (although I have often found his answer to be a very clear, "Don't be so daft!")
I know that organised religion has a very bad image, and rightly so given the way that many people have tended to organise it both in the past and in the present day. However, at the same time, there is a genuine positive power in the Church. I'm not given to evangelising, but this blog is definitely me bearing witness to what my God has done for me.
I would greatly appreciate your prayers for asseta, and I'm not fussy to which God or deity you offer them, as long as they are sincere. Please pray for healing and support for her.
Thank you,

It seems to me that it is the very "organising" of religion that leads to the many and horrific problems we see all around us. It becomes distanced from anything to do with God and increasingly absorbed into worldly, selfish politics. Refreshing to read open and unabashed experiences, in all aspects of what it is to be human.

I think, as previously said, if people are allowed to express their beliefs in their own way then it can only be a positive thing. It's when the 'middle men' get involved it tends to get a bit skewed. Prayers and positive thoughts on the way... the only living boy in Newport... | |
