Channel 4 -- who put in a submission to the consultation on the possession of extreme pornography -- have set up a poll on porn. This is a great opportunity to express your views and draw attention to the backlash campaign. Cast your vote and start a discussion on their forums. http://www.channel4.com/health/microsites/T/ted_... The vote comes after their programme on Ted Bundy which pointed out porn has been demonised by people with a vested interest and no evidence before. pls, pls, pls take five minutes to have your say...

I'm assuming everyone realises that the Channel 4 "straw poll" is nothing more than an interactive element of that particular webpage - not a consultancy vote, or anything particularly important to their views as a terrestrial broadcaster on the issue of pornography.

Yes. But there is also a forum to begin discussions. and rather shockingly these things do get referred to as signifiers of what the public thinks... Since what politicians think the public thinks is a substitute for ideology these days, best to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible.

Demolition Red - I totally admire your attitude and belief, but as someone speaking from the inside (I work for Channel 4 on a regular basis as a documentary maker) I can absolutely assure you that comments or votes left on their website forums have very little affect on the policy of the channel. What completely matters is viewing figures; if the channel was to launch some kind of viewers consultation via their website (which they wouldn't do anyway - they have much more scientific - in their view - ways of gathering viewing trends and attitudes) I'd be the first on here to suggest we all get involved. This poll that you referred to is nothing else but an end point to a little bit of editorial to get people talking about one of their programmes - the Ted Bundy porn film (which from what I saw was an interesting film). It will not in any way influence the channel's policy or approach to the wider issues of pornorgraphy or extreme sex on terrestral television any more than a few letters sent to them by 'angry of Tunbridge Wells' x | |

I may not have made myself clear. I'm not trying to influence Channel 4 by this means. I'm trying to spread the word to the electorate in as many fora/media as possible. Since this is one handed to us on a plate it would be silly to omit it. It is not a key part of backlash's stratgey, other than we are generally trying to draw attention as widely as possible and ths takes less than 5 minutes to vote and leave a comment.

far be it from me to be pedantic, but you did originally say that "Channel 4 ...have begun their own consultation on extreme porn" citing the link you gave. They haven't begun any kind of consultation - and as anyone who does go on their forums will quickly see, it is nothing more than a viewers 'blog' on stuff they've seen on the channel. It is not monitored by the powers that be. In other words, you're as well as going on any public forum that handles topics associated with sexuality and posting your thoughts. Just don't want people from here with good intentions spending ages spelling out their thoughts on the Channel 4 forums expecting it to be digested by influential folk or read by decision makers because that won't be happening. |
