As you can see Mildred has branched out from her piloting exploits. She was recently to be found exploring the physics of whip cracking. She created a small cloud and accidently whipped a companion but solved the age-old mystery of why whips crack. She's a smug scientific cow!

False-colour image of a human leukaemia (T-ALL: T-acute lymphoblastic leukaemia). This picture was taken in my lab. It is simultaneously beautiful and chilling. It is the perfect illustration of the driving force behind what we do in the lab and of the balance and contrast between life and death.

9 Aug 05 The day the sun died
Total eclipse of the sun, Zimbabwe June 2001. Totality lasted for 3 minutes and 13 seconds of eery almost-darkness. The stars shone in the middle of the day and a chill passed across the high African plain. The rebirth was greeted by local children waving sparklers and dancing, welcoming a new dawn for the second time that day.
