| 20 Jun 07 | Robert Mapplethorpe, 'Italian Devil', 1988 "Italian Devil", by one of the 20th century's most influential photographers, the American Robert Mapplethorpe. Oct. 2007 is the 10th anniversary of the seizing of a book of Mapplethorpe's work from the University of Central England, Birmingham, by West Midlands Police. The UCE vice chancellor threatened with prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act if the book were not destroyed. The university stood its ground and six months later the book was returned and no charges were laid. A detailed account of the fiasco now appears to be only available with a direct link to the UCE's archives: http://web.archive.org/web/20060823022442/www.uc... | |
| 7 Jan 07 | Pompeii sarcophagus An ornamental marble sarcophagus from ancient Pompeii featuring an image of the penis on a herma of the minor rustic fertility god Priapus. Priapus' enormous phallus is intended to ward off evil spirits and thieves (or else they get it full bore) – and also here being used by a satyr as a dildo for anal sex. Don't ya just love satyrs?! | |

| 27 Jul 06 | 1 - A cilice - not Geo's cilice that we used This is an example of a cilice. Geo makes her own cilices -- "knitted" from surgical stainless steel. Our sub (checkers) thought it was divine! This graphic goes with our weblog entry "The Mortification". | |
| 3 Aug 06 | Wearing the cilice (censored!) We didn't think the original pic was overly risqué, but uploading was denied. Not IC's fault since it's better to err on the side of caution in the shadow of an authoritarian state and a mostly conservative and reactionary population. | |
| 3 Aug 06 | Wearing Geo's cilice Checkers wearing the cilice | |
| 27 Jul 06 | After-marks of wearing Geo's cilice checkers' thigh after the cilice was removed. checkers was originally required to wear the cilice for two hours, but Mistress Geo, in all her blessed wisdom, modified this command to two hours while actually walking -- checkers wore the cilice for a total of approximately seven hours. (See our weblog entry "The Mortification".) | |
