To help explain a little about myself, I will tell you the true story of my horse and how I became his alpha. We have been together for over 15 years, many of them have not been easy and he has hurt me in many ways, and there were many times I wanted to give up. But something kept me trying, maybe I am just suborn or was it I saw something very special in this horse that had no respect for humans. My horse and I are VERY alike in many ways, except I don't have four legs, a fur coat or a long black tail, but our experiences have followed a similar trail.

OUR STORY

He was just coming up to 5 years old when I first met him, strong fit, and with anger and hurt in his eyes. I was to become his 5th owner, a lot of owners for such a young horse. All previous owners had used and abused him without giving a thought to his needs. One had used him for breeding keeping him locked up and away from his own kind. Another had used this young stallion in a riding school and tried to beat him into submission; another did not understand his nature at all and was cruel to him, soon passing him on to yet another person who would abuse him.

I took on this troublesome horse and soon found I had my hands full. For over four years I tried all the usual methods, none of them work. In those first years he broken my ribs, and gave me bruises that any Dom would be proud of. Until one day someone told me about a new way of training horses that got the horse to do things because they wanted to, not because they were forced to. I did a lot of research, got the simple equipment that was required and started to learn the games to play with my horse, as this is the way the training started.

One of the games was to make your horse to walk backwards while you stood in front of him waggling a long lead line. For months I stood in the arena trying to make him walk backward, in all weathers, sun, wind and rain. But he just stood there defiant; I suppose you could say he was the horse version of a BRAT. Then one day he took ONE step backwards. I flung my arm around his neck and cried tears of joy, and my horse nuzzled me as if to say “Thank You”. You see, my horse had been waiting to find the one that could be Alpha to him, the one that would not give up at the first sign of trouble, someone who would respect his strength and spirit.

We have come a long way together, he still test me now and then to see if I am still Alpha, but the horse they said could not be trained, that should have been shot, is a pleasure to own. I have learned a lot from him, and still have a lot to learn. We now have a relationship that is the envy of most horse owners. He will never be perfect, and neither will I, but our mutual respect and love for each other will never end. IN LOVING MEMORY OF BJ MY HORSE WHO IS NOW ON ANOTHER JOURNEY.
