Unconditional positive regard (Carl Rogers, Client-centred therapy) means for your session of therapy your therapist shows acceptance of you, your beliefs and interests. So your therapist may not understand or accept your BDSM interests but will not show this. The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists exhibitionism, fetishism, masochism, sadism, transvestic fetishism, voyeurism as paraphilias sexual dysfunction not otherwise specified (along with paedophilia). In short most if not all of our BDSM interests are considered mental disorders and dysfunctions. So your vanilla therapist may feel that your fetish is the cause or effect of your issues and try and treat you for them.
