| My tights are tangled round my knees and I am curled into myself and his shoulder. I have been yelping and twisting to escape this hurt that comes from all angles: the raking of my thighs and my back; the hail of blows that have flowered already; the appalling bright ache in my nipples. Strands of my hair litter the bed and the floor. This is a pain I cannot escape and I cannot bear and I struggle with animal fear. | The ground is hard and your skin is soft. My neck snapped back with the weight of my head and cracked on the paving slabs and there is a bruise that is as tender as a nectarine. If you pushed back my hair it would glow plum purple. I can see bright lights green behind my eyelids, press on them and you can feel my eyes chasing the patterns. My elbows are grazed and sting where the cigarette ash and grey dust rub in and armour me with London grime, my spine inverse cobbles against the concrete. | When I was small I was scared of the dark. I once was on holiday in Wales, staying with my parents and brother in a cottage in the middle of nowhere. There were no streetlights, no passing cars, no moon that night. I was in bunk beds with my brother. A nightmare of being trapped in a cave-in, pinned down by rocks, unable to see. Smacking desperately against the rockfall, trying to escape. When I woke up, screaming, I couldn't see anything in the pitch black.
