| 22 Feb 10 | Economic theories (35) by aphenine | (21 Mar 10, 12:30 AM by gaynor_payne) |
| I've been thinking for a long time about economics in general. I started thinking about it for various reasons, not least because I was pretty unhappy with economic policy in the world prior to the Credit Crunch. My gut feeling was that something Very Bad was going to happen, only I couldn't understand how to explain rationally why I thought so, and talking about something you can't explain doesn't make for great debate. | Due to the forthcoming cuts in local authority spending, the condition of the economy, social mayhem and not to forget a looming Armageddon, what pollicises would you put in place if you were a minister in the political party that wins the next election?

| … or fate, kismet. Call it what you will, but do you believe in predestination? And does that mean that you can have no influence over your life, that in fact whatever you do, however much you think you are exercising freewill, all you are doing, in reality, is fulfilling a path that has already been determined for you?

| 12 Feb 10 | How we trash the world (6) by merrynb99 | (13 Feb 10, 1:05 PM by proccie) |
| When I read this report (link below) today (purely out of interest, you understand) it reminded me of my current frustration at the way capitalism works these days; how the Profit Principle drives the incremental cost-cutting mindset more and more every year, in every service and product - while prices to end consumers spiral constantly upward and upward, in margins too small to measure over short periods of time. But over the long term suddenly one day we reach a Tipping Point, and we find ourselves in a world where we pay exorbitant prices for trashy quality - at every level. [more...]
