[b]Scat[/b] is also known as [b]faeces[/b] (or [b]fæces[/b]), [b]shit[/b] and [b]excrement[/b].

The word "faeces" is the plural of the Latin word "faex" meaning "dregs".

It/they are semi-solid waste products from the [about=Wikipedia:gastrointestinal tract]digestive tract[/about] expelled through the [about=anus]anus[/about].

The distinctive odour of feces is due to [about=Wikipedia:bacterial]bacterial[/about] action. Bacteria produce compounds such as [about=Wikipedia:indole]indole[/about], [about=Wikipedia:skatole]skatole[/about], and [about=Wikipedia:mercaptans]mercaptans[/about], which are rich in sulphur, as well as the inorganic gas hydrogen sulfide. These are the same compounds that are responsible for the odour of [about=Wikipedia:flatulence]flatulence[/about].

Feces can be black if dried blood is present in them from a bleed. More active bleeding can lead feces to be red in colour.

Yellowing of feces can be caused by an infection known as [about=Wikipedia:giardia]giardia[/about]. Giardia are tiny parasitic organisms. If giardia infects the intestines it can cause severe yellow [about=Wikipedia:diarrhea]diarrhoea[/about]. This is a dangerous communicable infection and must be reported.

Feces are generally a [about=taboo]taboo[/about] subject. This is probably because of the need to keep feces well away from food, for health reasons.

[about=Coprophilia]Coprophilia[/about], also known as "fecophilia", is a sexual attraction to feces. [about=Coprophagia]Coprophagia[/about] is the extremely hazardous practice of eating feces.

[about=Wikipedia:Coprophobia]Coprophobia[/about], also known as "[about=Wikipedia:fecophobia]fecophobia[/about]", is a strong irrational fear of feces.
