Martinet
A martinet is an obsolete term for a kind of
cat o'nine tails formerly used in French
schools to
chastise pupils.
Still used in some French homes, and often seen on sale in hardware
shops and market stalls. Most commonly a wooden handle about
250mm/10" long with a dozen or more leather bootlace type lashes 300mm-
350mm/12"-14" long. Quite stingy.
