Dol is a basic and smallest unit for measuring the intensity of pain, equal to the faint sensation felt when heat rays are first applied to the skin.
It comes from the Latin dolor meaning pain or grief. This root is also related to dolorous, condolence, doleful and even indolent. Until the early 18th Century, indolent meant 'causing little or no pain'.
