Alt.sex.bondage

The alt.sex.bondage Usenet newsgroup was the first publically visible BDSM resource on the Internet. As well as those interested in sexual bondage, people interested in alternate sexuality were drawn to it, among them those interested in what is now considered BDSM.

Discussions in the group popularised many components of today's BDSM subculture, including the abbreviation "BDSM" and maxims such as Ugol's Law and YKIOK,IJNMK. The term "Total Power Exchange" was first coined during debates on alt.sex.bondage and the abbreviation TPE was born there.

alt.sex.bondage was gradually overrun by spam adverts, and discussion moved to uk.people.bdsm and soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm. Most online BDSM discussion is now on various discussion boards and mailing lists.
