The [b]alt.sex.bondage[/b] [about=Newsgroup]Usenet newsgroup[/about] (created ca. 1989) was the first publicly visible BDSM resource on the [about=Internet]Internet[/about]. As well as those interested in sexual [about=bondage]bondage[/about], people interested in [about=alternate sexuality]alternate sexuality[/about] were drawn to it, among them those interested in what is now considered [about=BDSM]BDSM[/about]. Discussions in the group popularised many components of today's BDSM subculture, including the abbreviation "BDSM" and maxims such as [about=Ugol's Law]Ugol's Law[/about] and [about=YKIOK,IJNMK]YKIOK,IJNMK[/about]. The term "[about=Total Power Exchange]Total Power Exchange[/about]" was first coined during [url=http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=7o79tu%24t23%241%40links.magenta.com]debates[/url] on alt.sex.bondage and the abbreviation [about=TPE]TPE[/about] was born there. alt.sex.bondage was gradually overrun by spam adverts, and discussion moved to [about=uk.people.bdsm]uk.people.bdsm[/about] and [about=soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm]soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm[/about]. Most online BDSM discussion is now on various [about=Discussion_boards]discussion boards and mailing lists[/about].
