Removing “Evidence” From Computers (68)

Hi,

I have posted this in “Activism” as my course of action is as a direct result of recent legislation.

Just before turning off my PC, I clear my

  • Cookies,
  • Temporary Internet Files,
  • Recent,
  • MS Office Recent,
  • Event Viewer,
  • History

and save any possibly contentious material directly to an external hard drive.

I use a folder containing short cuts for the above on my external hard drive for ease and speed.

Is there anything else I should be doing to confound a casual/ non hi-tech snooper?

Do you do all that manually? Don't you just get a window washer instead?

What do you do with your external hard drive? Because if the police swoops in the will be looking for external hard drives, and then all history deleting etc is pointless, as they have everything on your external hard drive anyway! Correct me if I'm wrong, please!

Thanks for that link. The top recomendation is pretty comprhensive.

I have something similar but often find that traces and odd files still remain.

I was wondering if anyone had a comprehensive list (or link to) of caches that are wipeable (and accessable) for the popular operating systems.

Clear does NOT remove. It merely marks the "index" of your hard disc that this location can be overwritten.

As for the old bill or anyone with more than the most basic level of computer savvy, well for that you need to take your external drive out into the back yard, remove the drive from your pc and place it outside too. Dissasemble all drives using only a 4lb lump hammer.

It's easy to tell the difference between right and wrong. What's hard is choosing the wrong that's more right.

The hard drive has a load of innocuous photo files and then under those the "interesting stuff" is encrypted and almost invisible. It's also stashed very carefully. I'm not too worried about that.

I'm also aware that if they set the hi-tech dogs on it all there's not much which can remain hidden forever. I take good advice but am far from being any kind of 'techie' so all suggestions gratefully received.

From what I recall you will not be liable for any images you had on the computer but deleted prior to the law coming into force, so if they are hanging around in the background somewhere it will be obvious to them that the originals were erased.

Also, have two external hard drives and keep one in a totally different house/location to your computer and remember to interchange them regularly to keep them both updated.

Thats what I was afraid of. Semtex.exe anyone?

ETA:

I have been told of "shredder programmes" which overwrite about 600 times. They sound like a good last resort. Does anyone have experience of using them and how long would "600 times" take?

If they are hanging round in the background somewhere they have not been erased.

Perhaps as an analogy....

You have some proper paper prints of illegal images.

You throw them in the bin in the kitchen (erase them)

You still posses them to all intents and purposes until you empty the kitchen bin into the wheelie AND the council empty that.

It's easy to tell the difference between right and wrong. What's hard is choosing the wrong that's more right.

Problem with a hard drive though, to continue the analogy, is that some of those pictures have stuck themselves to the inside of the bin and transfered the image. So even once 'thrown away' an impression of what was there remains.
