After carrying some very encouraging articles during the MM trial, a glance through today's newspapers seem very critical both of the judge and the morality of "someone seeing prostitutes behind his wife's back" (to quote them)
They seem to think that the "Fourth Estate" is in danger of being gagged in investigative journalism.
I suppose with "breaking news" on TV and the internet they feel that in order to stay in business they cannot rely on "bread and butter" news stories but rely more on more on eye catching "Exclusive" lurid stories to maintain their circulations. More of the "You provide the war, I'll supply the photos" ^Thunder^

All but one of the public audience believed that it wasn't right to invade MM's privacy. Hmmmmm, they're obviously not the NOTW public!

If the print media is brewing a minor shitstorm over this, it agains should serve as a reminder why it's so crucial for everyone to understand and spread the word about net neutrality before it's gone. Once it's gone there is absolutely no going back and there will be no campaigning about violent porn, because there will be no sites to view porn on etc. |

It could well be that they sense that their days of cartblanche "public interest" stories excuses are soon to run out. In theory the PCC should now re-issue its code of practice with tightenned up public interest definititions. However, not a peep from the PCC.
Rumours from across the moat is that they are watching the libel actions in Europe, but they may well now introduce a toughened up article 8 and 10 of the EUHR for the next session of the Eurorean parliament. MM has many influential friends in Europe, and especially within the EU. |

Certainly the conversation about it at work today was all along the lines of - it's nobody's business what he does in private, what's the big deal anyway, etc. Which all sounded quite positive. "The unexamined life is not worth living"

I doubt that the PCC (traditionally less use than a chocolate tea-pot) really understands the difference between a story in which the public may be interested and a story which is in the best interests of the public for them to know.

Did you have to mention him having friends in Europe?
You know how that can get some people excited... |

Whilst the board of the PCC has a majority of independent (non-press) members, they can only adjudicate in relation to the "Editors' Code of Practice" which, as the name suggests, is written by editors of newspapers. Unless the editors want to change the rules, they ain't gonna change. Obligatory wanky Latin tagline: Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit

Well that expression is actually in the PCC guidelines, but that's all they are, guidelines.
And the PCC has the power to wag its finger to say "naughty newspaper, shouldn't do that..."
PS At least you can eat a chocolate teapot |
