Well, people will at least be more likely to risk it, now that it is much more likely that a court case will succeed. I agree it won't stop every possible future tabloid invasion of privacy story, but I feel it is a good step forward.

Section 63 criminalises "extreme" images of consenting adults - see http://www.backlash-uk.org.uk/ and http://www.seenoevil.org.uk/wiki/index.php/Main_... .

Indeed but when you are emotionally spent...

There are plenty of barristers and solicitors who would take on a case on its meits if they bel;ieve it would set a precident and/or be beneficial to law in general. It also does nothing to hurt their reputations either.

So a moral victory, but a fine that NoW will consider well worth it for a good story.

With the costs involved, the NoW will have to pay around £900,000.

Quote we heard today was more along the lines of £1.125 millions, plus the way is now open for the four innocent ladies to start actions themselves. A big one in the eye for the News of the Screws.

To correct that figure, the additional £225,000 is something to do with the new action just being started in the libel courts.

Do you really think £1m will stop the NotW publishing such stories? Of course not, don't be so naive. It is a drop in the ocean for such a large company. The arrogant statement the editor made after the case proves their attitude, if you'd have listened to him alone, you'd have thought they'd have won!

I really hope some legal companies will help out "smaller" people hurt by this hideous tabloid, but who really is going to risk a court case against a company who can afford the best lawyers, only the super rich like Mosley, who has had his name dragged through the mud through all this, so fine or not, his reputation is ruined.

If there is a sucession of privacy and libel cases against newspapers owned by News International within the EU, then EU itself may start anti-trust investigations into News international as it is far too powrful an organisation.

Microshaft upset the EU commissioners in the 1980's and now MSN's strangle hold with in Europe is being loosened. Bearing in mind MSN could buy News Int out of its petty cash float, the dirty digger has got to be on his guard and if his l;egal and business teams are on the ball they'll be advising correctly.

Maybe there's now hope for the lady from Milton Keynes area (an IC member) whose name escapes me who recently lost her job as a teacher through the shite published about her in the NoTW.

I really feel sorry for that lady. I too have to take care as my work involves working with children, albeit at a distance. I hasten to add i have no "interest" in children, just consenting adults. Maybe I won't have to be so paranoid in future.

Well done Mr Mosley and common sense from Judge Eady.

It saddens me taht in the climate created today, especially by the likes of newspapers like the NoTW, Sun etc that people feel that they have to emphasise thae fact the have no interest ibn children.

Just goes to show the unwarranted influence the news media have on our lives these days, methinks the move to The hague I was recently offered may become a realitya s the country is going slowly paranoid.

Isn't it more than a tad hypocritical that the NotW and Sun rags usually publish pictures of a naked young lady on page 3, runs salacious "Dear Deidrie..." type letters just after the TV listings and then numerous adult telephone-line services, no doubt including BDSM topics, just before the financial section. All of which is done in the best possible taste *rollseyes*

It takes a lot of money to look this cheap

It may curb them a bit. They will probably use lawyers more. I think one of the women said she didn't work for 2 months after so I suppose her loss is 2 months' wages if her privacy rights were breached. They could certainly write to make a claim. I'm not sure it would be worth the women suing because of the time involved and further publicity.

Both the NoTW and the Sun have a team of solicitors who scrutinise all of the kiss & tell and public interest stories. Looks like they may be being re-instructed as Murdoch's down atleast £900K!
