As member of IC you can post short updates about what you're doing and links to interesting posts or pages on to your "wall". This is similar to the status updates on sites like Facebook and Twitter. If you allow it, other members can post replies to your updates which will appear on your wall to.
Before you start posting personal information, please think through the implications of other people reading it in the future or finding it with a search engine.
There are "Updates" and "Walls" links near the top of all the pages on the site. These takes you to a list of updates made by other people you are following. (Once you start posting yourself, your updates will be included too.) Each update contains a link like "says" or "replies" which takes you to the update on the wall it appears on. It's worth looking at a few other walls to see how people are using this feature of the site.
To post yourself, use the box at the top of the page. There is a character counter to show how much more you can type. You can include ICcode to make links, bold type, etc.
There is a link to your own wall from the "Status updates" and "Walls" pages, and while you have an update that was posted in the last two weeks, it also appears in the right hand column of your profile page, with a link to your wall.
Wherever you see a "Reply" button on your own or someone else's wall you can post replies. These buttons disappear from updates 72 hours after they are posted, and members can control who can reply using the options on their "Wall, Chat, Weblog, and Board settings" page.
On some pictures, where the picture owner has enabled it, you can add comments, and these also appear as wall updates.
Automatic entries will be added: when you start a thread on the boards, weblogs, or groups; when you upload a picture; when you subscribe to a group; or when you join someone's network.
These automatic updates stay in the system for 14 days.
