The Mistress Index

and Informed Consent

This page explains how to use The Mistress Index and other parts of Informed Consent ("IC") to advertise professional mistresses, dominatrixes, pro-domme, pro-bottom etc services.

To do any of these things, you first need to join Informed Consent. See the Sign-up and Sign-in guide if you're not already a member.

Once you've joined, you're welcome to describe the services you provide on your profile, which can be modified using the Your Settings pages accessible via the link in the top left hand corner of each page when you are signed-in. Please tick the £ box at this point to make it clear that your profile is talking about BDSM-for-money services. (If you also want to advertise for non-professional relationships, we explain how to do this at the bottom of this page.)

Thousands of people sign-in to IC every day to find out about BDSM and meet other people. The web boards discuss hundreds of topics, and you may find the dedicated Pro-Mistresses etc board especially useful for talking with clients and peers across the country.

The best way to promote your service's website is to take out a banner ad, and this is done by going back to the Your Settings page, and then to Manage Banner Ads. This allows you to upload a standard 468x60 sized banner to IC, where it will be checked by the admin team and approved.

Pro banners are immediately eligible for listing on The Mistress Index for free: as soon as your banner is approved, it will start appearing on the Index.

If you also want your banner to appear in the banner slots at the top of each page of Informed Consent, then you need to pay some money into your banners account and set a daily rate. The banners guide explains how the banners system can be used to advertise BDSM events, shops, venues and services in general.

Once you have a banner approved, the Manage Banners page allows you to pay some money into your banners account using a credit or debit card. You can pay in as little or as much as you want, and payments take effect immediately.

The next step is to set a banner rate for your banner in pounds and pence per day, again using the Manage Banners page. The higher the rate, the more your banner will be seen and the more visitors your website will receive, and we recommend a figure in the range £2 - £10.

Advice about banners

If you don't already have a banner and don't feel like making one yourself, then IC's BDSM Businesses board is a good place to ask about kink-friendly designers.

In our experience, banners are more likely to be clicked if you:

  • Include picture(s) - at least one photograph, ideally showing the advertiser in person
  • State your location or region - this is especially important for face-to-face services
  • Indicate that you are offering BDSM-for-money - your banner will appear alongside shops, events, venues etc so you need to make this clear
  • Use good contrast - computer screens vary a lot, and if the background or text is too dark/light some people won't be able to read it!

The Mistress Index website

www.mistressindex.com is a special gateway into IC that is dedicated to professional services, with mistresses' banners searchable by postcode and direct links to recent topics on the Pro-Mistresses etc board.

If you have a pro banner approved and in the system, then your banner will automatically be displayed for free on The Mistress Index. Clients may also search the banners by UK postcode and distance, and this can be set on your Profile Settings page, inside Your Settings on IC. You do not need to give your exact postcode: the city letter, 1 and 1AA is enough (so "M1 1AA" for Manchester.)

Banners on The Mistress Index are sorted by what we're calling "website popularity". Initially, that means sorting according to how many visitors come from your website to www.mistressindex.com. If this number is the same for two advertisers, then they are also sorted by how many times this month their banners have been clicked on IC.

This means you can raise the prominence of your banner by adding a link to http://www.mistressindex.com/ on your website's link page and allowing browsers to discover The Mistress Index. Even more effective is to place a link to http://www.mistressindex.com/ on your entry page or other busy parts of your site. You do not need to use a special link or code, as The Mistress Index software will identify browsers coming from your site and rerank your banner accordingly.

We find that text links with a brief explanation of why the site is likely to be interesting (eg the Pro-Mistresses etc board, or banners searchable by postcode) is the most effective way to encourage clicks. However, if you do wish to use a banner, we have a temporary one which you can upload to your own site:

Having pro and non-pro profiles

As explained above, if you wish to advertise a BDSM-for-money service on your IC profile, please tick the £ box on your Profile Settings page. This makes it clear to potential clients or partners what is being talked about right from the start.

If you wish to advertise for a partner, we ask that you maintain two profiles, with and without the £ box ticked, and use your non-professional profile to do this. (Due to the way the IC system works, business profiles are not listed in the Personal Ads listings.) You can indicate that you own both profiles, but please do so without advertising: for example, "I also have the profile Mistress_Example" is fine; but "If you are looking for professional domination, look at my Mistress_Example profile" is still an advert.

IC Acceptable Use Policy

This page has explained the implications of the IC Acceptable Use Policy, which you should also read before using the site.
